"You build the new bridge next to the old one. Then you tear out the old bridge. Slide the new one into place."
That is how the Utah Department of Transportation summed up its plan for the Interstate 80 bridges at the Jeremy Ranch interchange. Said that way, it sounds quick. For anyone in Summit Park, it is half of the picture. East of the neighborhood, the Jeremy Ranch work restarted in September and runs into late summer 2027. West of it, in Parleys Canyon, a separate UDOT program covering seven bridges is scheduled to start construction in spring 2027 and continue through fall 2028.
Lay the two schedules side by side and they overlap. Spring 2027 is when UDOT plans the full weekend closures at Jeremy Ranch, and it is also when the Parleys bridge work is set to begin. So the months between now and then are the lighter part of this cycle. The current inconvenience is real, but it is the smaller one.
East of Summit Park, Homestead Road Is Already Down to One Lane
UDOT is replacing both the eastbound and westbound I-80 bridges at Jeremy Ranch. TownLift reported that the structures are more than 50 years old and that replacing them now costs less than continuing to repair them. The project was set to start in early August, then paused for about a month while utilities were relocated. KPCW reported on Sept. 10 that the roadwork had resumed.
Here is what that looks like on the ground today:
- Homestead Road under I-80 is reduced to one lane in each direction for the length of construction.
- The Jeremy Ranch and Pinebrook roundabouts will see lane closures and periodic traffic shifts.
- Work hours are weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., plus nighttime work as needed.
- The Homestead Trail stays open. Through October it runs on Homestead Road, separated from traffic by barrels. After that it moves to another temporary location for the rest of the project. UDOT hasn't named that location yet and says it will send an update when the change happens.
The trail timing has already changed once. TownLift's Sept. 11 report said the trail would be on the road for about two weeks. UDOT's live project page now says through October. People who walk or bike the Homestead Trail should go by the UDOT page.
The slide-in method is the reason most of this work can happen beside the freeway rather than on it. The trade-off is that the disruption comes in short, concentrated bursts. In spring 2027, I-80 at Jeremy Ranch will fully close for up to two weekends while crews remove the old bridges and slide the new ones into place. TownLift reported that exact dates will be announced closer to the closures.
West of Summit Park, Seven Parleys Bridges Move From Design to Construction
The second project gets less local coverage because it is in Salt Lake County. It is still the route to the valley. UDOT plans to rehabilitate or replace the decks on seven bridges in Parleys Canyon. The locations are 2500 East, Foothill Drive, the ramps over I-215, the Rock Quarry interchange, the Mount Aire interchange, and near the Mountain Dell Water Treatment Plant.
Design runs from summer 2025 to spring 2027. Construction is scheduled from spring 2027 to fall 2028.
This schedule has also moved. When UDOT announced its 2026 construction program on March 26, it grouped the Jeremy Ranch bridges with other I-80 work in a $73 million package for Salt Lake and Summit counties and said the bridge work in that package would last through late 2027. The Parleys project's own page now runs into fall 2028. The $73 million covers several projects, so it isn't the cost of either bridge job.
The canyon itself is close to the end of this year's work. UDOT scheduled paving from Mountain Dell to Lambs Canyon from May 2026 through fall 2026, with reduced speeds and shifting traffic patterns. A culvert rehabilitation project covering 50 miles from Parleys Canyon to Emory is scheduled for summer through fall 2026. That work is mostly on the shoulder, and UDOT doesn't expect lane closures from it.
Where the Two Calendars Meet
Here are both projects in one view, using the dates UDOT has published:
| Season | Jeremy Ranch, east | Parleys Canyon, west |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | Construction resumed in September. One lane each way on Homestead Road. Trail on the road through October. | Paving from Mountain Dell to Lambs Canyon wraps up. Bridge design continues. |
| Winter 2026–27 | Project continues. UDOT hasn't announced a winter pause. | Design phase. No bridge construction scheduled. |
| Spring 2027 | Up to two full weekend closures of I-80. Dates not yet announced. | Construction scheduled to begin. |
| Summer 2027 | Planned finish in late summer 2027. | Construction continues. |
| 2028 | Complete. | Construction runs through fall 2028. |
The winter row matters most right now. UDOT's Jeremy Ranch page shows the project continuing to late summer 2027 and says nothing about stopping for snow season. Plan for Homestead Road to stay at one lane each way through ski season unless UDOT says otherwise.
The spring row is the one to put on the calendar. Neither UDOT page says whether Parleys lane restrictions and the Jeremy Ranch closure weekends could fall in the same weeks. Both projects list the same season, and Summit Park is between them.
Spring 2027 Has No Published Detour Yet
UDOT hasn't published a route for drivers during the Jeremy Ranch closure weekends. Any detour map circulating before UDOT releases one is a guess.
What UDOT has published is general guidance for days when Parleys Canyon backs up. Its list of alternates is short, and it comes with warnings:
- SR-224 Empire Pass and SR-190 Guardsman Pass, a scenic byway from Park City to Big Cottonwood Canyon.
- SR-65 East Canyon, which links I-80 in northern Summit County to Parleys Canyon at Mountain Dell, with Emigration Canyon continuing into Salt Lake City.
- US-189 through Provo Canyon or I-84 through Weber Canyon, depending on where you're going.
UDOT notes that the first two have steep grades, sharp curves, and narrow lanes in places. It calls them unsuitable for large vehicles, RVs, trailers, and drivers who don't know mountain roads. Navigation apps may still suggest them when the interstate slows down.
UDOT's other advice for canyon traffic is practical. Check its traffic cameras and travel-times dashboard before leaving. If a crash is blocking lanes, wait for traffic to clear. During paving, plan trips around the usual work window of Sunday through Thursday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
For errands toward Kimball Junction, the High Valley Transit SR-224 roadwork near Ute Boulevard, Olympic Parkway, Silver Springs Drive and Old Ranch Road was winding down in late September. A project official said everything should be "back to normal by the end of October." That work is road construction only. Bus rapid transit service between Kimball Junction and Old Town is expected to start in 2028.
Getting the Alerts Before the Dates Land
The closure weekends are to be announced closer to the time, and both projects have already changed their schedules once. The surest way to hear about changes is to sign up for alerts from each project:
- Jeremy Ranch bridges: call 435-731-9296, email [email protected], or visit the UDOT project page.
- Parleys Canyon bridges: call the hotline at 385-273-7073, email [email protected], or sign up for construction updates and text alerts on the Parleys bridge project page.
- All Wasatch Back projects: UDOT's area construction hub offers text or email updates for individual projects or for every project in the area.
Signing up for both projects is the only way to see the two spring schedules together. The alerts for Jeremy Ranch and Parleys come from separate projects, and UDOT hasn't published a combined calendar for the corridor.
If you're planning a closing, a move, or visits from out-of-town family next spring, these closure dates belong on the calendar before anything else is set. Cindy Speering keeps an eye on the I-80 schedule for her Summit Park clients and is glad to help you plan around it. Let's Connect.
